What is Health check for man?

A sexual health check-up is an opportunity for you to discuss any sexual health concerns you may have.

If you are sexually active having a regular sexual health check-up is always a good idea. You don't need to have physical symptoms to undergo a sexual health check-up.

A standard sexual health check-up will involve:

  • sexual history
  • examination and tests and
  • follow up if required.

Sexual history

During a sexual health check-up you will be asked questions about sexual history. These are standard questions that doctor will ask every patient.

YOU CAN SKIP ANY OF THEM YOU PREFER NOT TO ANSWER.

WE RESPECT YOUR CONFIDENTIALITY

Questions may focus on:

  • whether you have any physical symptoms
  • previous STD you may have had
  • sexual behaviour, if you want to talk about it (eg what kind of sex you have had)
  • drug and alcohol use and
  • general questions, about your health and medication.

Examination and tests

Physical examinations can be embarrassing but they are an important part of a sexual health check-up. Your doctor will do his best to make sure you feel comfortable.

If you have concerns about a physical examination, discuss these with your doctor beforehand. Your doctor can explain what the procedure will involve.

A physical examination might involve:

  • genital examination;
  • swabs (long cotton bud) from the rectum, tip of the penis or back of the throat;
  • blood tests for STD;
  • urine tests for STD

Remember YOU CAN SAY NO TO having any of these tests or have them at your next visit.

Follow up

If tests are taken, then it is important that you return to your doctor for follow up. This allows you to find out the results of the test.
